Connellsville’s parks, recreation department to benefit from Cornhole Tournament

Untold numbers of sports fans wait with bated breath as River City Promotions and Connellsville’s New Haven Hose Company welcome competitors to the first annual Cornhole Tournament on Sunday.
The event will be held at New Haven Hose, 123 S. Seventh St.
Doors will open at 1 p.m., teams should be registered by 2, and the tournament will begin at 2:30. Late walk-ins will be welcomed but are not guaranteed a place. Tech-savvy cornholers may register online at www.rivercitypromotions.com.
Registration is $25 for a two-person team, which includes a T-shirt for each contestant. Anyone younger than 21 must be accompanied by an adult.
River City Promotions has limited the competition to 64 teams of two, but if hoards of competitors appear, another cornhole setup will be added.
Cornhole champions will compete for trophies and cash prizes, plus the satisfaction of benefiting the Connellsville Parks and Recreation Department.
Patty Firestone, the go-to contact, said the Cornhole Tournament deliberately coincides with football’s far less popular Pro Bowl. She did not say that the Cornhole Tournament will one day surpass the Pro Bowl’s nationwide popularity, but Armstrong Cable will record the history-making event for posterity.
Cornholing is easier than most world championship sports, Firestone said. “Each person gets four beanbags. There are two boards 27 feet apart. There is one hole in each board. Throwing the bag through the hole equals three points. If the bag is by the hole, that’s one point. If it’s on ground, zero points. Each team goes to 21 points, like horseshoes.”
New Haven Hose will sell food and beverages during the event. Chances will be offered on tip boards during the competition.
And fear not, football fans, New Haven Hose will broadcast the Pro Bowl during the Cornhole Tournament.
River City Promotions also sponsored the River City Sprint Triathlon last summer and plans to hold the event again this year. Firestone said a summer cornhole tournament likely will be a part of the triathlon.
